Alfred Cheney Johnston

Though, not actually a pinup photographer, we felt that Alfred Cheney Johnston deserved special mention, here, at the American Pinup. Johnston could more accurately be labeled the father of glamour photography. Johnston was born on April 8, 1885, into an affluent banking family, which lived in Mount Vernon, NY. He attended the National Academy of Design in New York, where he studied painting and illustration.

Johnston is most noted for his relationship with famous American Broadway impresiaro, Florenz (Flo) Ziegfeld, who was known as the “glorifier of the American girl” and showcased beautiful women prominently in his famous Ziegfeld Follies. Johnston’s timeless photographs featured the women who performed for Ziegfeld, some of whom went on to become famous Hollywood actresses.

  1. You should really name them, it would so much more interesting.
I already know half the model names in your gallery if you need some help, just drop me a line

    1. I agree. Sadly most blogs or websites fail to provide captions. I have a blog page on Johnston, link below. Most of the pictures have captions. When in doubt I didn’t put anything. All additional info is welcome and appreciated. I’m thinking of moving the page to WordPress: easier to post and comments can be made directly under the picture when you click it.
